In spring two important feasts take place in Seville: the "Semana Santa", (holy week), characterised by impressive religious processions, and the "Feria de Abril", a joyful event celebrating the most authentic folklore of the region, featuring exhibitions of flamenco, horses and bull fights.
Semana Santa
The week preceding the Holy Easter is an intense period for the city, with 57 of the old brotherhoods taking part in the events. Religious passion is expressed here at its best. According to tradition, the celebrations of the holy week dates back to the XIV century, and the rituals as they are represented today have their roots in the XVI century. The main attractions of the feast are the parades of the " pasos", which are chariots (more than a hundred) holding the images of the Madonna and Jesus (very famous is the Macarena) and leading them from the various parishes to the Cathedral. The chariots are carried by members of the brotherhoods ("costaleros"), who must hold about 50 kilogram per person while making their way through the tortuous streets filled with a thousand people standing there watching.
Feria de Abril
The Feria de Abril is held every year, two weeks after the Holy Week. The wide space of the "Real de la Feria", not far from Maria Luisa Park, is staged with big tents and decorated with numerous colourful lanterns. The local people come here to party until dawn. In these days the whole city revolves around the Feria, generating a joyful and chaotic party, though maintaining the sense of folklore and tradition untouched. Men and women dress in their typical suits, jackets and boots for men, and traditional flamenco dress for women. During the Feria it is also possible to watch a parade called "Paseo de Caballos", with horses and beautiful decorated carriages filled with people dressed in their traditional suits. In such a glorious celebration of all Spanish traditions, bull fights could not miss. These controversial but always appreciated events are held every afternoon at the "Plaza de toros de la Maestranza", one of the oldest in Spain.
